21st-Century PLNs for School Leaders

21st-Century PLNs for School Leaders | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it
George Couros (@gcouros on Twitter) is the Division Principal of Innovative Teaching and Learning for Parkland School Division, a large district near Edmonton, Alberta.

As many school administrators are enjoying their summer break, we all tend to think of ways that we can make our school better in the upcoming year. Often, I point school principals and district leaders to a powerful post by Will Richardson that helps us point the finger right at ourselves when we are looking to push our school ahead. Richardson states:

"Meaningful change ain't gonna happen for our kids if we're not willing to invest in it for ourselves first. At the heart, it's not about schools . . . it's about us."

How to Setup a Wordpress Blog in 5 Minutes

How to Setup a Wordpress Blog in 5 Minutes | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

I started my blog using WordPress and I have found it a platform that makes it easy to own and publish your own content online.

It is the foundation to the success of this blog which currently receives over 300,000 hits per month.

If you’re looking for an easy way to create a web presence and start sharing your ideas online, the best way to do this is to create a blog. Millions of users around the world already express themselves and share their thoughts by means of their personal blogs.

The advantage of having your own WordPress blog that is self-hosted is that you own it.

It is good to have a Facebook “page” or a Tumblr blog but they are owned by someone else and you can have a web presence there but under their “Terms and Conditions” It is basically a rental.

Self-hosting a WordPress site is the next step, after folks feel they've outgrown the free wordpress.com sites.

Both org and .com variants of Wordpress are a delight to use, I have sued them for years, had to abandon my hosted Wordpress blog when I upgraded my website.  I miss it.

Beyond Your Borders: Promoting Your Business Internationally Using Social Media

Beyond Your Borders: Promoting Your Business Internationally Using Social Media | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

The aptly named world wide web has opened up new methods of marketing for businesses both great and small. The benefits of localizing company websites to target foreign markets are now widely recognized (Common Sense Advisory studies suggest an average return of US$25 for every $1 spent on localization) and many businesses now use social media platforms for domestic marketing, but very few appear to be using those platforms to promote their services abroad.

For example, Econsultancy’s 2010 Social Media and Online PR Report reported that 83% of marketers were planning to increase their spending on social media this year, yet only 26% had plans to run campaigns in more than one country.

5 Tips to Prevent Digital Burnout and Maintain Good Mental Health | Aprendiendo a Distancia | Scoop.it

The Internet's reach is so pervasive, it feels as though it has always been around. The reality is that the web is still in its infancy, and we don't really understand the risks it poses to our mental health. In fact, various experts, such as Larry D. Rosen, a psychologist and author of "iDisorder," believe that personal gadgets are making us mentally ill and are exacerbating other problems such as narcissism, depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Other mental health professionals have already identified disorders ranging from "Facebook depression" to "phantom vibration syndrome."

Realistically, most of us don't have the luxury of disconnecting from the Internet, particularly communication professionals whose work depends more and more on it.

However, there are various things you can do to curtail the negative effects it may have and prevent digital burnout.
