Bournville, now a suburb of Birmingham, was the original “chocolate-box village”. Cadbury was, after all, the first confectioner to use picturesque scenes on its packaging. Purpose-built to house the workers who toiled in the chocolate factory, the idea was to fabricate an idealised version of a typical English village – all part of the Cadbury brothers’ enlightened approach to the wellbeing of their workers.
