Shen Shaomin / 沈少民 : "I sleep on top of myself", 2011, silica gel simulation, at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Sydney " I Sleep on Top of Myself is a series of hairless, motorized, lifelike sculptures of animals which portend a future where the earth is severely depleted of natural resources-so much so that animals begin to loose their fur. Trapped in deep sleep, these breathing creatures-a cat, a dog, a bunny, and two geese-are forced to sleep on the remnants of their fur and feathers in order to survive. As a metaphor, this quietly troubling piece asks if we humans will be forced to survive on the remnants of our past once we have exhausted all of our natural resources. Shen Shaomin, "Summit, 2010" - Mao. Newer Older. "Summit (2010) "Summit (2010) is conceived as a response to the global financial crisis. Taking as a point of reference the annual G8 Summit, Shen has created a hypothetical meeting of the most significant communist leaders. Their life-sized corpses, arranged in a pentagon, rest in crystal coffins that reflect their nationalities. Castro, the still-alive exception, lies silently on his deathbed." Shen Shaomin: I Want to Know What Infinity Is, 2011-12. Silica gel, breathing installation, lawn chair. 23 1/2 x 59 x 31 1/2 inches (60 x 150 x 80 cm). "Through a similar methodology, I Want to Know What Infinity Is questions the urge to relentlessly develop and expand our economies at all costs. Similar to the way we strive for development, the old, naked, breathing hyperrealistic sculpture of a woman relentlessly strives for a perfect tan. In Shen Shaomin's eyes, the consequences of our constant need for development will change the face of our planet, just as the undying urge for beauty transformed this old woman's body."

Shen Shaomin: Bonsai, 2007 Work use the manipulation and torture of these plants in order to question our current attitudes towards consumption and nature whilst examining Chinese culture. The intimately scaled, beautiful and ancient looking trees are twisted and buckled using metal instruments reminiscent of dental equipment. Accompanied by text these small objects question the viewers sense of their own environments and the concerned yet oblivious perspective the majority of us exercise on a day-to-day basis. Aesthetically these small scaled works conjure ideas of destruction versus nurture and traditional versus industrial, awakening the uncanny.
