Joi Ito interviewed by Juliet Bartz. About MIT media lab’s Disobedience Award

Joi Ito interviewed by Juliet Bartz. About MIT media lab’s Disobedience Award | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

In the 1980s, Joi Ito traded in library tables at the University of Chicago for turntables at Chicago’s Smart Bar. But his attempt to evade academia wouldn’t stick.

The two-time college dropout became director of the MIT Media Lab in 2011, making the 50-year-old an academic administrator at one of the most renowned universities in the world. Before that, he was an entrepreneur who started a number of his own companies and invested in the likes of Flickr, Twitter and Kickstarter

A proud supporter of “responsible disobedience” — the lab is awarding its first $250,000 Disobedience Award this July — Ito is in Chicago Wednesday as a Chicago Ideas speaker. He will appear with IDEO Chicago Executive Portfolio Director Neil Stevenson at an event to discuss Chicago’s role in “embracing culture, art and experimentation.”

Blue Sky talked to Ito — whose interdisciplinary media lab focuses on the creative use of digital technology, sciences, arts and design — about the disobedience mindset....

Media Archaeology Lab : the past must be lived so that the present can be seen... (past solutions for present problems) | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Founded in 2009 and generously supported by the College of Media, Communication and Information as well as the Department of English at the University of Colorado at Boulder, the motto of the Media Archaeology Lab (MAL) is that “the past must be lived so that the present can be seen.”

Nearly all digital media labs are conceived of as a place for experimental research using the most up-to-date, cutting-edge tools available. By contrast, the MAL – which very well might be the largest of its kind in the world – is a place for cross-disciplinary experimental research and teaching using still functioning media from the past. The MAL is propelled equally by the need to both preserve and maintain access to historically important media of all kinds – from magic lanterns, projectors, typewriters to personal computers from the 1970s through the 1990s – as well as early works of digital literature/art which were created on the hardware/software housed in the lab.

Just in terms of our collection of digital devices, we currently have 35 portables/laptops, 73 desktop computers, 22 handheld devices, 8 other computing devices, and 10 game consoles.

The research group Displays – created and coordinated by Thierry Fournier (artist, curator and researcher) with J. Emil Sennewald (critic, journalist, lecturer and researcher) – aims to question and experiment with the exhibition forms in a post-digital context, that is pervaded by the presence of digital technology and the Internet throughout both culture and practices. This evolution has already transformed artworks, collaboration modes, curatorial practices, art criticism, art education and outreach, audiences, and how they look at art. It also entails an acknowledgment of digital materiality and of its processes, after a historical period marked by an ideology of dematerialization. Furthermore, a certain porosity has set in between practices – for example, between those of artists, curators and audiences, in the case of curation – a practice that involves reinterpretation and exchanges, which attests to the conversational status of media...

What Is A Media Lab? | situated practices in media studies | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Media labs are liminal but increasingly powerful spaces in many contemporary settings. They appear in universities and colleges, wedged uneasily between traditional departments and faculties. They’re also in basements, warehouses, strip malls and squats. They are stable to varying degrees; many have long-term addresses and an itinerant roster of occupants. Some pop up in one location for a few days, then relocate to another. Sometimes they’re even in mobile trucks in the streets, bringing tools and expertise to children in schools and the general public. As clusters of tools and talent streamlined to produce economic value, labs sometime align with the most ruthless of venture capitalists; in other cases, they are free and open for all to use, disdainful of all commercial motivations.

Despite their sudden visibility due to the burgeoning of the digital humanities, media labs have a surprisingly long history. As part of the historical avant-gardes, media arts labs were the sites where the new materials and aesthetics of technical modernity were developed. They often share a common ideology, tied not just to the neoliberal drive to privatize, innovate and disrupt, but to long-standing modernist ideas about creative destruction, quantification and the value of scientificité...
