OpenDrop - #opensource digital microfludics platform for research purposes

OpenDrop - #opensource digital microfludics platform for research purposes | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

OpenDrop is a new design for an open source digital microfludics platform for research purposes. The device uses recent electro-wetting technology to control small droplets of liquids. Potential applications are lab on a chip devices for automating processes of digital biology. How ever the present design should also open the technology to other field and allow experimentation to find new applications. Including the field of art, music, games and education.

The design approach chosen relies strongly on Do-It-Your-Self (DIY) and Low-Cost. To aim is to only use standard and widely-available components, materials, and production processes. We try to avoid parts that aren’t available to individual customers or processes that require expensive setup costs. Also all design files and software required to operate your hardware are shared under open licenses.

We commit to Best Practices for Open-Source Hardware (OSHWA)
We respect The {unspoken} rules of Open Source Hardware

Salvatore Iaconesi: Open-sourcing a cure for his cancer - By Alessandro Delfanti

Salvatore Iaconesi is an artist, interaction designer and hacker. He is the founder of the international network Art is Open Source, which works on the transformations brought about by ubiquitous digital technologies and networks. In 2012 he was a TED Fellow and is Eisenhower Fellow since 2013. With Oriana Persico, he teaches Interaction Design, Digital Design and Transmedia Narratives at La Sapienza University of Rome, ISIA Design Florence, Rome University of Fine Arts and IED Design institute.

In 2012, Iaconesi was diagnosed with brain cancer. He decided to hack and then publish his own medical data online and thus crowdsource his cancer, engaging people from all over the world to find a cure and to discover what it could mean to be cured in the information age. Through the website La Cura (The Cure), to this day he has received close to 900,000 messages from about 200,000 people.

Along with Alessandro Delfanti (Media@McGill Postdoctoral Fellow) and Patrick Dubé (SAT/CHU Sainte-Justine Living Lab), Iaconesi and Persico will be participating in Media@McGill’s panel on “Participatory Medicine,” Thursday, Feb. 13, at 5:30 p.m. in Leacock 232 (855 Sherbrooke Street West). The conference is free and open to the public. For more information, go here. The following is an interview Iaconesi did for the McGill Reporter.

Malware is not only about viruses – companies preinstall it all the time / Richard Stallman | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it
Since I started free software in the 80s, developers have grown to routinely mistreat users by shackling behaviour and snooping – but we have ways to resist

In 1983, when I started the free software movement, malware was so rare that each case was shocking and scandalous. Now it’s normal.

To be sure, I am not talking about viruses. Malware is the name for a program designed to mistreat its users. Viruses typically are malicious, but software products and software preinstalled in products can also be malicious – and often are, when not free/libre. ...

"Level of Confidence" - interactive installation/softwares by Rafael Lozano-Hemmer #mediaart #Ayotzinapa | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

"Level of Confidence" is an art project to commemorate the mass kidnapping and murder of 43 students from the Ayotzinapa normalista school in Iguala, Guerrero, Mexico. It was released on March 26, 2015, exactly six months after the massacre took place. The project consists of a face-recognition camera that has been trained to tirelessly look for the faces of the disappeared students. As you stand in front of the camera, the system uses algorithms to find which student's facial features look most like yours and gives a "level of confidence" on how accurate the match is, in percent.

The biometric surveillance algorithms used, -Eigen, Fisher and LBPH-, are typically used by military and police forces to look for suspicious individuals whereas in this project they are used to search for victims instead. The piece will always fail to make a positive match, as we know that the students were likely murdered and burnt in a massacre where government, police forces and drug cartels were involved, but the commemorative side of the project is the relentless search for the students and the overlap of their image with the public's own facial features. ...

Here's an idea. Building a signaling framework for WebRTC with federation built into it. That's what Matrix is and here's an interview with Matthew Hodgson about it.

Matthew Hodgson is the Technical co-founder of Matrix.org. And Matrix.org is an open source federated signaling standard with an accompanying framework implementation. The idea as well as the execution is really interesting.

2014 brought us plenty of new open-spec, community-backed SBCs — from $35 bargains, to octa-core powerhouses — and all with Linux or Android support.

In May of this year, LinuxGizmos and Linux.com collaborated on a joint survey, asking our readers to choose their favorite open-spec hacker SBCs from a list of 32 that run Linux and/or Android. Our SBC survey winners, ranked one to five, included the Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone Black, Odroid-XU, CubieTruck, and Banana Pi single board computers. Thanks to the flood of new open-spec, community-backed boards, as well as the demise of others, we have updated our list for this end-of-year snapshot. ...

Digital Arts Circus - The new-media bohemia gathers in Belgrade - Festival Resonate

Digital Arts Circus - The new-media bohemia gathers in Belgrade - Festival Resonate | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

They do not call themselves ‘artists’, but their creations mesmerize and challenge passers-by. They are shun by traditional auction houses and most museums, but might be the future of art. We met the new-media art scene in Belgrade last week, at the Resonate festival.

Belgrade has been announced to us as the new Berlin. Serbia was hit hard by the financial crisis. That’s the first thing locals mention. Berlin’s flamboyant mayor Klaus Wowereit is notoriously close to his city’s cultural class. Dragan Đilas, Belgrade’s mayor until late 2013, is a mass media mogul, who has brought Big Brother to Serbia. Performance artist Marina Abramović, who exposed at the New-York Guggenheim and works with Lady Gaga, is from Belgrade. The Museum of Contemporary Arts collection holds works by Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol, George Maciunas and Hannah Wilke. When it opened in 1958 it was one of Europe’s first national museums of modern art. Since it closed for renovation works in 2007 it has been slowly transforming into a ruin. Government funding has run out.

Terrapattern visual #searchtool for satellite imagery by Golan Levin, David Newbury, Kyle McDonald... | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

We present the alpha version of Terrapattern: "similar-image search" for satellite photos. It's an open-source tool for discovering "patterns of interest" in unlabeled satellite imagery—a prototype for exploring the unmapped, and the unmappable.

Terrapattern provides an open-ended interface for visual query-by-example. Simply click an interesting spot on Terrapattern's map, and it will find other locations that look similar. Our tool is ideal for locating specialized 'nonbuilding structures' and other forms of soft infrastructure that aren't usually indicated on maps.

There has never been a more exciting time to observe human activity and understand the patterns of humanity’s impact on the world. We aim to help people discover such patterns in satellite imagery, with the help of deep learning machine vision techniques.

Open Learning Steps and Open-sourcing #Festivals - #opensource | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it
How does an organisation open-source their cultural festival? Can we share the process for organising a festival, so that other groups can use it themselves?

How do organisations support activities and events throughout the year? Can we share the process for sustaining ongoing programs, so that other groups can do this too?

These are the questions that five experimental art, design and technology organisations from the Pixelache Network are asking themselves and others, and exploring, through a mobile circuit of workshops and seminars organized across Europe during 2013-2015.  Our common objective to co-produce a digital culture festival together through seven learning steps, taking place in the different partner countries.

In the process, Piksel (NO), Pikslaverk (IS), Mal au Pixel (FR) and Pixelache (FI) will gradually be working towards 'open-sourcing' their festival skills and tools to provide them to their UK partner Access Space Network, who will test and utilise them in organising their first digital culture festival, the closing event of this two year cycle. We hope this test implementation will refine our materials to be released for others to use and build upon. Meanwhile, Access Space Network will share their approach to providing a contunuing programme of openness - helping its partners to provide opportunities to learn, create and participate throughout the year. We are keen to capture the knowledge embodied in our respective workshops and festival production, and to share this with a broader range of users.

CLOUDS - interactive #documentary #opensource - by James George & Jonathan Minard

CLOUDS - interactive #documentary #opensource - by James George & Jonathan Minard | Digital #MediaArt(s) Numérique(s) | Scoop.it

Clouds is an interactive, generative, documentary that allows the viewer to explore different perspectives at the intersection of code and culture. Filmed using a new 3D cinema format called RGBD and created entirely with open-source software, Clouds uses a data-driven “story engine” to present an endless, ever-changing conversation.

The interview subjects in Clouds are an intergenerational community of more than 40 artists, designers, hackers and thinkers. They discuss the challenges of developing new forms of expression that resonate at a deeper human level. The documentary captures the story of collaboratively inventing open-source tools that form the foundation of a global creative culture. Interview subjects include founders of free creative coding platforms, such as Casey Reas and Zach Lieberman, as well as critical perspectives from thinkers like Bruce Sterling and Régine Debatty.

Clouds is not a linear film, but a real-time executable that generates sequences of dialog based on interactive input. Each of the interviews has been edited into individual fragments and richly tagged. An algorithm then leaps from clip to clip, creating new conversations on the fly, while preserving continuity of ideas and themes. Viewers use gesture and spatial interaction metaphors to chart a course through the rhizomatic content space.
