Chaa Creek Announces Maya 2012 Speakers

Chaa Creek Announces Maya 2012 Speakers | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Chaa Creek, which is hosting Belize’s 2012 Maya Winter Solstice Celebrations, has some amazing speakers for the series of workshops and lectures that will be part of the weeklong activities centred on December 21 2012.  They've announced David Ruiz, Rosita Arvigo, and Joe Awe so far.

"David Ruiz is a Belizean educator and the author of four books – Jonah Matapalo, Cuin seif Got, The Visit and Old Benque.  Mr Ruiz was born near Guatemala in 1966 in the border town of Benque Viejo del Carmen and writes in English and Spanish, recording traditional Maya legends and myths as well as dealing with more contemporary themes such as the experience of growing up in multicultural Belize.  Rosita Arvigo is the author of Sastun: My Apprenticeship with a Maya Healer and several other books on Maya natural healing, and anthropologist Joe Awe is Chaa Creek’s resident Mayanist at their Belize Natural History Centre."

A Day of Maya Medicine with Traditional Maya Healers

A Day of Maya Medicine with Traditional Maya Healers | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Chaa Creek has a great article on the Maya Medicine seminar at Cahal Pech: "The year 2012 has spurred interest in the Maya and the outlook toward this enigmatic civilization grows each day as we approach the winter solstice of 2012. In the Maya Heartland of Belize, the Maya are very much in our presence and we honor their hard work and dedication in contributing to Belize’s rich heritage."

Rainforest Remedy: Reconnecting with Nature in San Ignacio

Rainforest Remedy: Reconnecting with Nature in San Ignacio | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Spectacular article about Cayo!  Glad the author found the most magical spot around.  Some nice pictures of Xunantunich are in there, and AJAW Chocolate gets a great write up, as well as the San Ignacio Resort Hotel.  Well worth a read.

"Honestly, I ignorantly never knew that there was a magical place in western Belize that is chock full of adventure and healing.  So of course I put aside whatever it is that I was meant to be working on (typical me) and fell down the rabbit hole.  Mayan architecture.  Rainforest medicine.  Cave exploring.  Jungle Horseback Riding.  I was hooked before I even really knew anything about it but came to me at the exact moment where I could truly understand the magic.

I spent the next 2 days devouring Rosita Arvigo's book about her time with one of the last Mayan healers in the area.  It was spellbounding.  There are thousands of medicinal species of plants here.  The biodiversity is astounding and it's been quietly healing people for hundreds, maybe thousands, of years.  Bush doctors, shamans and village healers were common practice and had continued to scrape together this tradition orally after the Spanish burnt most of the important codexes that housed a wealth of critical information.

There was no other choice, I had to explore it. "

Tales of a Maya Shaman

Tales of a Maya Shaman | Cayo Scoop! The Ecology of Cayo Culture | Scoop.it

Rosita Arvigo spoke at Chaa Creek this week. There's a video attached.

"On Monday, Dr. Rosita Arvigo delivered a compelling presentation to more than 25 Chaa Creek Guests on her apprenticeship with Don Elijio Panti – Belize’s last Maya Shaman.

During her apprenticeship with Don Elijio, Dr. Arvigo learned an ancient Maya system of healing that employs medicinal plants, massage, acupuncture, herbal and sweat baths and prayers to effect cures on a wide range of maladies."
