AI feedback tool improves teaching practices

AI feedback tool improves teaching practices | AI up: Artificial Intelligence in Education | Scoop.it
The first study of its kind shows that a tool providing automated feedback improves instructors’ communication practices and student satisfaction.
Tony Parkin's insight:
Course feedback is always useful - and that includes AI-generated feedback!
"The researchers found that, on average, instructors who reviewed their feedback subsequently increased their use of uptake and questioning, with the most significant changes taking place in the third week of the course. Student learning and satisfaction with the course also increased among those whose instructors received feedback, compared with the control group."

Yes, AI could profoundly disrupt education. But maybe that’s not a bad thing | Rose Luckin | The Guardian

Yes, AI could profoundly disrupt education. But maybe that’s not a bad thing | Rose Luckin | The Guardian | AI up: Artificial Intelligence in Education | Scoop.it
Humans need to excel at things AI can’t do – and that means more creativity and critical thinking and less memorisation, says academic Rose Luckin
Tony Parkin's insight:
Rose puts folk straight: "A tool like ChatGPT has no understanding or knowledge. It merely collates bits of words together based on statistical probabilities to produce useful texts. It is an incredibly helpful assistant. But it is not knowledgable, or wise."
Carmen N. Galindo's curator insight, September 15, 2023 3:20 PM

This article explores the potential of AI to bring positive changes in education, with the perspective that such disruption is not necessarily detrimental. The interesting thing that they say is that ChatGPT does not have the value or unique human intelligence. Furthermore, it emphasizes that tolls like ChatGPT do not possess a true understanding of knowledge. The article says that human intelligence remains far more impressive that AI and far more intelligence.

With rise of AI-written essays, maybe the time has come to go back to the future, forget the written essay, and return to an oral tradition, where dialogue and debate become the main way that students can demonstrate their grasp and understanding?

Custom instructions for ChatGPT

Custom instructions for ChatGPT | AI up: Artificial Intelligence in Education | Scoop.it

We’re rolling out custom instructions to give you more control over how ChatGPT responds. Set your preferences, and ChatGPT will keep them in mind for all future conversations.

Tony Parkin's insight:
"ChatGPT will consider your custom instructions for every conversation going forward. The model will consider the instructions every time it responds, so you won’t have to repeat your preferences or information in every conversation. For example, a teacher crafting a lesson plan no longer has to repeat that they're teaching 3rd grade science."

6 Tenets of Postplagiarism: Writing in the Age of Artificial Intelligence | AI up: Artificial Intelligence in Education | Scoop.it

Hybrid writing, co-created by human and artificial intelligence together is becoming prevalent. Soon it will be the norm. Trying to determine where the human ends and where the artificial intelligence begins is pointless and futile.

AI: Checkmate for conventional education? –

AI: Checkmate for conventional education? – | AI up: Artificial Intelligence in Education | Scoop.it

Chegg, the US-based student-centred learning platform, had launched a new solution, the nicely punning Cheggmate, which is powered by AI like so many new educational tools. Here is what ChatGPT has to say about this new tool

Tony Parkin's insight:
I thought it might be fun to ask ChatGPT for reasons that students might want to subscribe to the new service – or more probably persuade their parents to do so. Obviously this involved asking it for an article featuringthe type of marketing sell that would hook students into paying up for such a service.
