UDL is essential in post-secondary pandemic learning

UDL is essential in post-secondary pandemic learning | ED262 mylineONLINE: Exceptionalities and Accessibilities | Scoop.it
The shock has passed, the sadness comes and goes, and the stretchy waistband pants are becoming a mainstay. Your college or university is staying online for the rest of this academic year, as well as summer, and you wonder about fall 2020.

While the trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic persists, it may be time to settle into an educational environment that will be more online than previously imagined.

Warning: You will not get through the same amount of content during this pandemic. Please do not try.

6 Ways to Engage Every Learner Using UDL -- THE Journal

6 Ways to Engage Every Learner Using UDL -- THE Journal | ED262 mylineONLINE: Exceptionalities and Accessibilities | Scoop.it
In any given classroom, there are invariably learners who simply don’t connect with what’s being taught. Lectures can be easy to tune out. A textbook can feel dense and boring to finish. Even a video can pose limitations for learners with sight or hearing difficulties. When these are the only options available, some learners are bound to fall behind without requesting special support, while others will surge ahead. Differentiation is one way to bridge this gap, and another is adapting the curriculum to suit all learners, instead of adjusting it to support the needs of each one.

That latter approach, called Universal Design for Learning (UDL), operates under a handful of broad principles that mainly concern themselves with the what, how and why of learning.

Linda Kaiser, PhD's curator insight, January 5, 2015 5:08 PM

Incorporating Universal Design concepts into e-learning projects can really help some people learn better.  I especially agree with the comment in this article where the author says you don't have to use all of the guidelines - start small and apply these ideas a bit at a time to additional lessons.  Eventually, it will become a way of thinking when designing instruction.

An exciting and well-established concept known as Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is gaining attention in higher education as a way to make digital learning programs more accessible to all learners, including those with a wide variety of learning challenges. Endorsed by EDUCAUSE’s Next Generation Digital Learning Environment (NGDLE) and the Department of Education’s Horizon Report, UDL is a framework to design learning in a systematic way to anticipate and remove barriers to student learning.

Ways Universal Design for Learning Can Benefit All Types of Learners - Five UDL Tips for Teachers | ED262 mylineONLINE: Exceptionalities and Accessibilities | Scoop.it

The authors of this excellent article on how UDL can benefit all types of learners present a universal design lesson for educators:

"If we think about and plan the best way to deliver the information for all students, not only will our instruction improve but it will also be accessible to everyone in the classroom.

For UDL to be both effective and properly implemented, the practitioner needs to know the difference between accommodating and modifying learning."  They illustrate this distinction through a fishing tale.

They go on to describe 5 effective UDL Tips for Teachers that when used effectively as accomodations will cultivate a group of learners capable of experienceing success beyond the classroom.

1. Provide digital notes

2. Use screen readers/audio books

3. Allow extra time

4. Use noise-reducing technology

5. Differentiate assessments

Access, Engage, and Express (TM) is the lens for understanding how anyone learns best. The reason we came up with these three words was to help educators easily understand their learners using this lens. We want Access, Engage, and Express to be an integral part of their daily approach to teaching and learning.  Using Access, Engage and Express was developed from the Universal Design for Learning® (UDL) principles that are based on neuroscience and how we learn.

"UDL is the framework for Personalized Learning."
Barbara Bray's curator insight, December 8, 2014 10:29 AM

Why do teachers and learners need a lens for learning? This post will share the importance of understanding how you learn best. Access is about how you transform and process information into useable knowledge. Engage is how you best engage with content. Express is how you demonstrate what you know and understand. If you use this lens, you and your teacher become partners in learning.

Bringing UDL to Scale: Critical Elements & Instructional Planning Process

Bringing UDL to Scale: Critical Elements & Instructional Planning Process | ED262 mylineONLINE: Exceptionalities and Accessibilities | Scoop.it

In recent years, the instructional framework of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) has received growing attention, yet many do not understand what UDL is. Understanding what UDL is, using the Critical Elements with fidelity and implementing the UDL Instructional Planning Process are the critical steps in scaling UDL.

"Bringing UDL to Scale: Establishing Critical Elements

In 2010, the UDL-Implementation and Research Network (UDL-IRN) (http://udl-irn.org/) was formed in collaboration with CAST and the National Center on UDL as a grassroots global network of educators, researchers, and developers focused on scaled implementation and research around UDL. Recognizing that UDL implementation will and should look different across different systems, it must also be acknowledged that a flexible fidelity of implementation is needed to support scaled practice. Based on this notion, members from the UDL-IRN undertook the task of developing a 1-page document that defined the Critical Elements of UDL-based instruction. Moreover, the goal was to develop a document that was user-friendly and meaningful to educators. After roughly a year of work with various groups, the UDL-IRN adopted and slightly modified version of a document developed in Michigan." (Elements outlined in this blog).

"Moving from Critical Elements to Instruction Planning

The next step for the UDL-IRN was to move forward on developing guidance for the instructional planning process. Using the Critical Elements as a springboard, the UDL-IRN developed an instructional planning process that aligns with the notion of backwards planning. This process has teachers establish clear goals, develop a plan for anticipated learner variability, develop a plan for how to measure outcomes, then plan instruction, and finally promotes a guided question for teacher reflection and understanding. The UDL Instructional Planning Process understands the iterative design notion of UDL implementation."
