Il Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini ospita al suo interno un piccolo borgo impreziosito dal tocco magico di Madre Natura, parliamo di Castelluccio di Norcia (PG) e del cosiddetto fenomeno della Fioritura. Localizzato a 1.452 metri di altitudine e a circa 30 km da Norcia, Castelluccio domina, dalla cima di una collina, un vastissimo altopiano.
La prima impressione rimanda all’immagine di un presepe dove antiche e piccole case si intersecano l’una con l’altra dando vita allo storico borgo. Da giugno a luglio, quando la neve è ormai sciolta e le temperature sono diventate decisamente miti, Castelluccio si veste a festa e indossa abiti fioriti! È proprio in questo periodo che ha luogo lo straordinario fenomeno della fioritura!
Tutto ha origine con la semina della lenticchia, la cosiddetta "Lénta", il prezioso legume prodotto in queste terre da centinaia di anni! Di fatto quella della lenticchia è l’unica coltivazione effettuata e le migliaia di fiori pronte a sbocciare e a colorare gli appezzamenti altro non sono che piante spontanee fiorite in seguito ai cicli di aratura, a semenze portate dal vento o accidentalmente seminate con le lenticchie! Narcisi, papaveri, ranuncoli, violette, trifogli e tante altre specie, costituiscono lo straordinario patchwork di campi multicolore! [...]

He was caught up in the streets of Europe's most famous Chocolate Festival, annually held in October in Perugia, where he could see all kinds of chocolate.

Le Infiorate di Spello  sono una manifestazione che si svolge ogni anno nella cittadina umbra in occasione della festività del Corpus Domini (nona domenica dopo la Pasqua).

Gli infioratori lavorano un’intera notte per realizzare tappeti e quadri floreali che si snodano per le vie del centro storico del caratteristico borgo destinati ad onorare il passaggio del Corpo di Cristo, portato in processione dal vescovo la domenica mattina. Il risultato è un percorso di circa 1,5 km caratterizzato dall’alternarsi di oltre sessanta diverse infiorate

Every year in the quaint and historic town of Spoleto, located in the Umbria region, one of the most important artistic festivals in the world takes place during the summer months: the “Festival dei Due Mondi," or Festival of the Two Worlds. This exuberant event was first started in 1958 by composer Gian Carlo Menotti.

Anyone who has an affinity for artistic forms of expression such as ballet, opera, painting, literature, music, theater, sculpture and every other form of contemporary art will enjoy this incredible festival.
As the festival expanded and grew in popularity year after year, the Festival dei Due Mondi became one of the premier cultural events in Italy, with a three-week schedule of music, theater and dance performances featuring a global assortment of artists and an extensive range of artistic exhibitions and displays.
There are two other mirrored events inspired by the festival in Spoleto, Italy: the Spoleto Festival USA in Spoleto's twin city of Charleston, SC was started in 1977, and the Melbourne International Arts Festival, held in Australia, began in 1986.

Look down and you will discover an elaborate patchwork of geometric mosaics worked in a style called Cosmatesque after the Cosmati family in Rome. The Cosmati worked for four generations in the 13th century perfecting the of opus sectile — or cut work — technique, in which inlays of delicate triangles and rectangles of colored stone and glass mosaics are set into stone matrices or encrusted onto stone bases. The resulting work alternates bands and blocks of intricate mosaic with contrasting bands, guilloches (a repetitive architectural pattern), and simple geometric shapes of unadorned white marble. L’uomo è misura di tutte le cose, diceva Protagora. In Umbria l'uomo ritrova la sua dimensione, riscoprendo un modo di viaggiare più lento ...

 Lo sapevate che la parola cacio ha avuto origine da come gli Antichi Umbri chiamavano il caglio? E che il più famoso proverbio sul formaggio (“Al contadino non far sapere quanto è buono il formaggio con le pere”) nacque dalle indicazione alimentari di Castore Durante, un medico gualdese del Cinquecento? In Umbria si produce formaggio da tremila anni con risultati eccellenti. Una grande tradizione, nel segno della qualità.

Ma il formaggio umbro è ancora poco conosciuto rispetto ai più reclamizzati prodotti di altre regioni italiane. La lacuna è oggi in parte colmata da una agile ed esauriente pubblicazione, “L’Umbria dei Formaggi“, curata da Unioncamere Umbria e da Promocamera, l’azienda speciale della Camera di Commercio di Perugia. La guida, curata dai giornalisti Federico Fioravanti e Bruno Petronilli, è stata presentata da Giorgio Mencaroni, presidente di Unioncamere Umbria, alla presenza dei produttori e delle associazioni categoria, nella sede della Camera di Commercio di Perugia. Se ne parlerà a Perugia nella prima giornata del Festival del Giornalismo nel corso del panel “Ms Umbria, I presume…” coordinato da Federico Fioravanti, al quale parteciperanno sette giornalisti, scrittori di viaggio ed esperti di enogastronomia del Regno Unito che raccontano l’Italia ai loro connazionali.

L’appuntamento è fissato per le ore 10 del 24 aprile nel Centro Galeazzo Alessi a Perugia.

Approaching our 40th wedding anniversary, I knew that my wife, Jane, wanted to go somewhere special. What I found was Al Petrogallo, an Italian farmhouse built in 1571 - exactly 400 years before we married in 1971. She was impressed.
Al Petrogallo is in Umbria, near the Tuscan border in central Italy. I discovered it on agriturismo.it, a website about Italian country homes, and began corresponding by email with Antonella, daughter of the owner. Antonella said we would enjoy walking along the Tiber River and visiting nearby Umbertide. She recommended exploring the cities of Gubbio, Assisi and Perugia as well.
In early September 2011, we flew to Rome and then boarded three consecutive trains to Umbertide, where Antonella met us. The farm itself is a collection of three buildings with eight bedrooms, set amid wheat fields and sunflowers. Our apartment was roomy (about 900 square feet) and modern, yet lovingly restored with brick, tile and timber.
Poolside, we met guests from Germany, Belgium, Poland and the Netherlands. We enjoyed evenings together sampling local wine and cheese. We also met Antonella's sister, mother and father. It was her father, Mario, who had renovated the old home.
With the farm as our base, we began exploring a region steeped in history. As planned, we walked on the dirt path along the Tiber River to Umbertide, where we wandered through the colorful farmers market. (among our favorite discoveries: porchetta, roasted pork on a fresh, hard-crusted roll.)
One day Antonella's brother-in-law, Andre, kindly drove us to Gubbio, where he worked. In the middle of a conversation about the town's Roman influences and medieval architecture, we rounded a curve and came upon both—a Roman theater and, behind it, the walled city, whose narrow streets and stone buildings gave us a glimpse of the Middle Ages.
Then it was on to Perugia and Assisi. The former features an ancient underground city (reached by modern-day escalators). Tunnel-like walkways take visitors back to the times of the Etruscans, who predated the Romans.
Assisi, of course, is the birthplace of St. Francis. As we made our way along hilly streets there lined with quaint shops, we reached the basilica that bears his name - and found ourselves watching a wedding party. The link to our marriage four decades earlier was perfect.
The week went all too fast. We went on to Rome, but our best memories return to the farmhouse along the Tiber.
