Developing Digital Literacies for Teachers

Developing Digital Literacies for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

“How did you do that?” This is a question I have been asked a few times in my career when using an element of technology in my lessons.

The thing is, this is not a reaction to my students tackling some carefully crafted web quest or using iPads to create animated video clips (simply because I don’t usually do those kind of tasks but more on that later!) It is often a reaction to my class using an app like Padlet to collaborate or Kahoot to create their own quizzes.

“I didn’t do that,” is usually my answer. “I just set it up and my students did the rest.”

“But it seems so complicated,” they continue. “I could never do something like that.”

When a teacher is reluctant to use technology in class, there are two reasons they may offer – “I don’t know much about technology,” and/or “my students are much better with tech than me so how could I teach them anything with it?”

Developing the digital literacies of academic staff: an institutional approach

Developing the digital literacies of academic staff: an institutional approach | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

(2016). Developing the digital literacies of academic staff: an institutional approach. Research in Learning Technology: Vol. 24, No. 1, 31501. doi: 10.3402/rlt.v24.31501

Institutional engagement with digital literacies at the University of Brighton has been promoted through the creation of a Digital Literacies Framework (DLF) aimed at academic staff. The DLF consists of 38 literacies divided into four categories that align to the following key areas of academic work: • Learning and teaching • Research • Communication and collaboration • Administration For each literacy, there is an explanation of what the literacy is, why it is important and how to gain it, with links to resources and training opportunities. After an initial pilot, the DLF website was launched in the summer of 2014. This paper discusses the strategic context and policy development of the DLF, its initial conception and subsequent development based on a pilot phase, feedback and evaluation. It critically analyses two of the ways that engagement with the DLF have been promoted: (1) formal professional development schemes and (2) the use of a ‘School-based’ approach. It examines the successes and challenges of the University of Brighton's scheme and makes some suggestions for subsequent steps including taking a course-level approach.

I spent a good deal of time with this excellent report this weekend, exploring the models, examples, and expert commentary on a subject that near and dear to me. “Digital literacy involves finding, using and disseminating information in a digital world” (Deakin University, 2016). Digital literacy is also a transversal skill, which means that by having good digital literacy, a person’s ability to learn and improve other skills increases through the use of technology.

In the next 5-10 years, a number of routine jobs will be taken over by automation and artificial intelligence (AI) (ACS, 2016). This automation and AI will also be ingrained in workplaces, homes and everything we do, due to the increased productivity and lifestyle gains that these technologies provide. In order to remain current in the workplace, and to be able to fully function in society, the need for good digital literacy has never been greater.

The issue

Even today’s students need support with some areas of digital practice, particularly in an academic context, so it’s important to make sure that these needs are met.

While employability is an obvious driver, developing learners who can learn and thrive in a digital society is a key role for universities and colleges.

Developing Digital Literacies with Saudi Arabian HEIs

Developing Digital Literacies with Saudi Arabian HEIs | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

A delegation from Saudi Arabia have participated in a workshop on the strategic use of digital technology and skills development as part of a series of events planned for their visit to the UK, Germany and Washington D.C.

have just come back running a day and half workshop around the Strategic Use of TEL in Higher Education - it was a specific workshop to start off a series of events and workshops for the NCEL International Courses, organised by The International Academy for Educational Consultancy and Professional Development http://www.iaecpd.com/.  The group that I had the pleasure of working with was a group of academics and senior managers from Saudi Arabia.

The prezi I used can be accessed here: http://prezi.com/yjbtwgo5jbfw/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy

The group will be spending around 10 days in the UK and will be exploring a range of activities using a variety of tools, including iPads. Throughout the workshop they identified how important digital literacies were to any kind of innovation.  One of the most interesting activities was a look at the challenges associated with becoming an innovative institution, this sparked some interesting conversations.

It was great fun, and I hope that they enjoy their time in the UK (and come back soon!)
