12 Good Places to Find Historical Images to Spark Inquiry | Free Technology for Teachers

12 Good Places to Find Historical Images to Spark Inquiry | Free Technology for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Historical photographs, paintings, sketches, and maps can inspire all kinds of history questions. That is why for more than a decade I’ve used and recommended images from Today’s Document from the National Archives to prompt classroom discussion as the introduction to U.S. and World History lessons. There are dozens, perhaps hundreds, of other similar galleries on the web today. A list of some of my favorites is included below.

Three Good Places to Find Public Domain Video Clips

Three Good Places to Find Public Domain Video Clips | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Last week I answered an email from a reader who was trying to help one of her colleagues with a classroom video project. They wanted to know if it was possible to download YouTube videos or to make a screencast of a YouTube video to then use in another video. My response was to point out that the first option, downloading from YouTube with a 3rd party service is a violation of YouTube’s terms of service (section 5) unless there is a download link provided by YouTube. Making a screencast of a YouTube video is also a violation of the terms of service as well as being a likely copyright infringement.

5 Handy Visual Search Engines for Teachers and Students | Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

A few days ago I received an email from one of my readers here in Educational Technology and Mobile Learning inquiring about some suggestions on visual search engines. I have gone through my archive and come up with the list below.

Having access to the content in these search engines is one thing and sifting through the licensed content to use with your students is another thing; therefore I recommend that you first get yourself familiar with the ways and methods to search for CC licensed or public domaine images to use with students. This page is a good start for you.

Great images and where to find them - FasterCourse

Great images and where to find them - FasterCourse | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
All of us know that visual content can make an eLearning course more appealing for the learner. However, there are many things to consider when looking for appropriate images for your eLearning.

First and foremost, you want each image to support and add to the content of the particular slide – you definitely want to avoid the impression that images have been added for no other purpose than a pop of color. You also need to consider whether the image matches the theme and overall style of the course. For example, you might not want to introduce very bright and childish imagery into corporate training on identity theft.

Images speak louder than words. We all have recourse to images as visual aids in our teaching but the search for such images is not always an easy one. Most often, you spend a decent amount of time looking for pictures only to be disappointed that they are copyrighted . This is where the importance of having a ready made list of public domain image sources comes in handy.

Flickr is a great image hosting website that you can use to store and share your images. Flickr is also a powerful image search engine where you can find images others have posted. As a teacher, you can probably use this platform with your students to look for pictures to include in classroom projects.
