Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path

In my previous blog post, the architecture of learning, I outlined some of the key characteristics of learning in a digital age, and started to identify some of the main differences between Learning 1.0 (before social media) and Learning 2.0. In the summary of the article, I suggested that the distinct differences between the two types of learning are mostly based on how learners are changing the ways they interact, and their increased ability to create, share and organise their own learning. Learning 2.0 is socially much richer and more participatory, and relies more on interaction with other learners than any previous learning approach.

Of all the things I have read about the 21st century skills required for students success in today's info rich society, the visual below from edutopia captures the essence of these skills and touches on critical areas students need to work on to meet these skills.These skills are grouped in three main categories: learning,  creating and  collaborating:

I learned a new word today!  Actually, I still wrapping my head around it and what it could mean for teaching, learning, the classroom, educator professional development, my job . . . you get the idea.  The word that could be changing my life is Rhizonomy. It is so new it's not even in Wikipedia yet. Imagine that.

The rate of change is moving in such a speedy pace and sooner or later we will be dealing with  totally new paradigms in education; ones that are deeply grounded in information economy and collective "wisdom  of the mobs". These new changes are mainly driven by the digital culture we and our students have come to embrace, a culture that is predicated on participation, collaboration ,  distribution of knowledge sources, and co-creation of new resources and opportunities. But are we really doing what it takes to prepare our students for this paradigmatic change or what some scholars prefer to dub " Web 3.0 Learning " ?
