This presentation was part of a local effort to keep our community working—sponsored by the Foster Center at St. Bonaventure University near my home. Some of the resources I shared were not open source and merely cost $0, but many of the tools were also open source.

It is true that it's difficult to keep up with all the applications out there, so I've compiled a great list of the top 5 open source tools for libraries.

 

There was a time when working in the library I found it very frustrating (as many librarians do) that there were so few options for software that actually did what I needed. In libraries we're so used to there being this vendor=software model. Where one vendor controls a product and while there might be other similar products, they too are controlled by a vendor.

We’re about Open Education, Open Data, Open Source – basically trying to be as open as possible in as many ways as possible.

We’re working towards creating an open source open educational resource repository any one can install and run. The goal is that people anywhere can curate and maintain a list of open resources and then share them with the world, allowing different communities and organisations to be express how they want to use open content. We’ve aimed to take the spirit of openness in this sense, and try to extend it to everything we do.
