Digital Competence Framework for Educators (DigCompEdu)

The teaching professions face rapidly changing demands, which require a new, broader and more sophisticated set of competences than before. The ubiquity of digital devices and applications, in particular, requires educators to develop their digital competence.

The European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators (DigCompEdu) is a scientifically sound framework describing what it means for educators to be digitally competent. It provides a general reference frame to support the development of educator-specific digital competences in Europe. DigCompEdu is directed towards educators at all levels of education, from early childhood to higher and adult education, including general and vocational education and training, special needs education, and non-formal learning contexts.

Teachers who have high levels of self-efficacy, or those who believe in their own abilities, have the biggest impact on student learning, a new University of Melbourne review shows.

Ten amazing lesson planning apps and tools for teachers

Ten amazing lesson planning apps and tools for teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Creating and writing lesson plans are activities common to basic teacher education courses. Before entering a classroom, young educators are taught how to meticulously plan their time for the benefit of their students. The most obvious way that teachers avoid the traditional lesson planning concept is by finding ideas, or even entire plans, online ..."

It may seem like it wasn't enough time to observe in a classroom, but it was a start. Dave ultimately asked me to complete one of my 30-hour observation requirements in his class during that same semester. I went well beyond the 30 hours and stayed for 6 months. After that, Dave asked me to be his first student teacher.

Discovering that above all other things, you want to be a teacher, is one thing.

Seeing that long and sometimes tortuous journey through to its conclusion is another.

Teachers’ Informal Learning via Social Networking Technology | Ab Rashid

Teachers’ Informal Learning via Social Networking Technology | Ab Rashid  | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Discussion on teacher learning is often limited to a focus on formal professional development programmes. What and how teachers learn informally through their daily experiences is rarely explored. This research attempts to investigate how teachers engage in informal learning for their professional development when using Social Networking Site (SNS) technology. Data were generated using ethnographic approach whereby Facebook Timelines belonged to 22 English language teachers were observed for a period of six months. The analysis shows that the teachers frequently exchanged teaching related knowledge in their Timeline conversations and they received rich responses from both teaching and non-teaching Friends. This paper thus argues that social networking site, such as Facebook is a potential platform to engage teachers in informal learning for their professional development.

Teachers Are Living in a Tinderbox of Stressful Conditions. These Scientific Approaches Can Help. | EdSurge News | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

America is suffering through two insidious and deadly pandemics, one brought forth by a novel virus and the other by a long-overdue reckoning of the intransigent racial and ethnic disparity at every level within all of our systems.

Nowhere is this more evident than in our public schools, where nearly 50 percent of children come from communities of color, and with nearly one-third of Black children and one-quarter of Hispanic children living at or below the poverty level. It is precisely these students who are trapped in the crosshairs of both pandemics: the coronavirus having laid bare inequities in health risk, access to virtual education platforms and basic safety both in and outside of their homes—all factors compounded by the profoundly damaging effects of poverty and racism.

Teacher Educators Living the Connected Learning Life

Teacher Educators Living the Connected Learning Life | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
It was perhaps inevitable. A bunch of die-hard connected learning scholars, all working in our own institutions, separated by space, time, and borders. Studying about how people learn through connecting, yet totally isolated ourselves. Like shards of a magnet, we found each other, all reaching out for community, comradery, and connection. And finally, after years of “shouldn’t we get together” and “why don’t we collaborate,” we did: we came together to form the Connected Learning in Teacher Education (CLinTE) network in 2017.

Beware your Unconscious Bias by @acrig15

Beware your Unconscious Bias by @acrig15 | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
As a school principal, parents would regularly come to my office to share concerns about something a teacher had “done” to negatively impact the educational performance of their child. Invariably, they felt that whatever had transpired was a conscious act on the part of the professional, and would often pressure for the complaint to be anonymously addressed because otherwise the teacher might ‘“take it out on my child!”
