NASA and LSA to further deepen US-Luxembourg co-operation in space (22.10.2019)
Communiqué par: Luxembourg Space Agency In May 2019, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Space between the Governments of the United States of America and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg designated both NASA and LSA to exchange information about prospective collaboration. Based on this MoU, NASA Administrator James. F. Bridenstine and LSA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Marc Serres signed at the 70th International Aeronautical Congress in Washington DC a joint statement of intent to further deepen US-Luxembourg co-operation in space.

Administrator Bridenstine and Chief Executive Officer Serres acknowledged the steps taken in the United States and in Luxembourg to advance opportunities for the commercial use of space. They noted that these developments have set the stage for fruitful collaboration in areas of mutual interest, particularly in the context of NASA's priority on returning humans to the surface of the Moon by 2024 through the Artemis program, and its plans to establish the basis for a long-term human presence there by 2028, with a view towards human exploration of Mars.
They also underlined the potential these initiatives have for space resources exploration and utilization as well as for private sector entities and public private partnerships to contribute to the exploration and utilization of the Moon, Mars, and other celestial bodies. Chief Executive Officer Serres emphasized that LSA places a great importance on its aim to contribute to the peaceful exploration and sustainable utilization of space resources for the benefit of humankind.

The Luxembourg Government announced on Wednesday that Simon "Pete" Worden, Chairman of the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, has joined the government's Advisory Board of the recently announced spaceresources.lu initiative.

The news followed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the State, the Société Nationale de Crédit et d'Investissement (SNCI) and Deep Space Industries (DSI) to explore and utilise space resources from Near Earth Objects (NEOs), such as asteroids.

Prior to joining the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, Dr. Worden held the postion of Director of NASA's Ames Research Center until he retired in March 2015. He has held several roles in the United Stated Air Force and was research professor of Astronomy, Optical Sciences and Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona. A recognised expert on both civil and military space and science issues, Dr. Worden has been a leader in building partnerships between governments and the private sector.

Selon le Wort, l’agence spatiale luxembourgeoise devrait être lancée avant les vacances d’été.

Les missions semblent se préciser pour l’agence spatiale luxembourgeoise. Elle avait été annoncée lors d’une visite économique thématique en Californie en avril 2017, avec une activité essentiellement centrée sur un fonds d’investissement. 

Dans son édition du 26 mai, le Wort rappelle que ses missions excluront bien des activités scientifiques, mais comprendront en revanche la promotion des initiatives du pays en la matière (en incluant les activités du cluster spatial), ainsi qu’un volet éducatif. Paperjam avait annoncé le 26 avril la création à l’Uni d’un master dédié qui se rattache à la création de cette agence spatiale et, plus largement, à l’initiative Spaceresources.lu.

Nos confrères précisent que le deuxième étage du ministère de l’Économie est désormais disponible pour accueillir l’équipe de l’agence, suite au déménagement du Conseil de la concurrence vers le 43, rue Sainte-Zithe. Une douzaine de personnes ont été recrutées depuis le début de l’année. Elles seront rejointes par la direction de l’espace du ministère de l’Économie.

Wissenschaftler des LIST arbeiten gemeinsam mit der NASA-Forschung  und Ispace an der Entwicklung eines Massenspektrometers für Weltraum-Einsätze. Was kann man mit dem Gerät im Weltall machen?

 Als die Delegation des Ames Research Center der NASA vor gut zweieinhalb Jahren das erste Mal im Großherzogtum war, hat sie auch das Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) besucht. Und dabei ist Pete Worden, damals noch Chef der NASA- Forschungseinrichtung, das vom LIST entwickelte Massenspektrometer FieldSpec direkt ins Auge gefallen. Was zum einen an den kompakten Ausmaßen des Geräts lag, zum anderen aber auch an dessen Einsatzmöglichkeiten.

Das Massenspektrometer, mit dem sich das Masse-Ladungs-Verhältnis von Atomen oder Molekülen messen lässt, war nämlich speziell für hydrologische Zwecke entwickelt worden (siehe Infobox) – und als solches vielleicht auch im Weltraum einsetzbar.

Um letzteres herauszufinden, haben das LIST und das Ames Research Center der NASA nun ein gemeinsames Forschungsprojekt gestartet. Ziel ist es, das Massenspektrometer so umzubauen, dass es auch für wissenschaftliche Zwecke im Weltraum geeignet ist. „Wir gehen dabei aus zwei Blickwinkeln an die Sache ran“, erklärt Tom Wirtz, Physiker am LIST und Leiter der Forschungsgruppe. „Zum einen wollen wir herausfinden, ob das, was die NASA braucht, mit unserem Gerät machbar ist“, sagt er, „zum anderen beschäftigt uns umgekehrt die Frage, was wir mit diesem Gerät alles für die NASA machen könnten.“

Das LIST hat zudem vor kurzem eine neue Zusammenarbeit mit der Ispace begonnen. Die japanische Robotik-Start-Up, Finalist des renommierten Innovationswettbewerbs Google Lunar XPRIZE will einen Roboter-Spektrometer entwickeln, der fähig ist, den Mond zu erkunden.
