connected knowledge, collective learning | littlebylittlejohn.com

"... we increasingly rely on networked technologies, making choices and behaviours explicit, instantly recorded and potentially analysed to make sense of collective knowledge. Learning analytics is already examining how people solve problems, recording learner preferences and using predictive analytics to offer personalisation and adaptation of learner connections. The learning pathways and behaviours of previous learners are potentially become a valuable resource that future learners can source and use. Complex problem solving requires learners to have flexible responses which could not have been anticipated (Nardi, Whittaker and Schwarz, 2000). But we don’t yet understand how different resource types might support collective learning and knowledge building."

100 more social media statistics for 2012 - and what about learning?

100 more social media statistics for 2012 - and what about learning? | Networked learning | Scoop.it

All these statistics show the continuing importance of social media in western society, but still people ask me if we should really use social media in (distance) learning. How can we afford not to?Example: Our OUNL students of psychology have posted about 150 messages on our internal discussion forum since X-mas, as opposed to 11000 messages in their own (closed) Facebook group! Need I say more?

Thanks for sharing, Cara.

Comment: nice collection of slides, even if there is too much emphasis on a PLN as an information filtering device and too little on the in my view mandatory bidirectionality of communication in a network. (pbsloep)

Promoting and assessing value creation in communities and networks: a conceptual framework | via @downes

Promoting and assessing value creation in communities and networks: a conceptual framework | via @downes | Networked learning | Scoop.it

Etienne Wenger, Beverly Trayner and Maarten de Laat come up with an important new document on community management. "It is a foundation paper presenting a framework for promoting and assessing value creation in communities and networks," they write, "it includes a theoretical framework and toolkit for helping professionals to tell stories on the value that networks and communities create when they are used for learning and to articulate how these activities result in desired outcomes that improve teaching practice." By "community" they mean "community of practice, which [they] define as a learning partnership among people who find it useful to learn from and with each other about a particular domain.

Supporting the Social Workplace Learning Continuum | Learning in the Social Workplace | Networked learning | Scoop.it
Instead of thinking in terms of formal and informal learning as opposites, Jane Hart suggests a social workplace learning continuum. Maybe educational institutions should study this continuum carefully.
"In my previous blog post I explained how I recognized it is difficult for a lot of organisations to support informal and social learning in their organisations, because they ...

Networked: The New Social Operating System « Learning ...

Review by Giorgio Berintini of a book by Rainie and Wellman on online networking. "Drawing on extensive evidence, they [Rainie and Wellman] examine how the move to networked individualism has expanded personal relationships beyond households and neighborhoods; transformed work into less hierarchical, more team-driven enterprises; encouraged individuals to create and share content; and changed the way people obtain information." To the extent that learning is a social activity, mastering these modern networking skills is crucial to networked learning.

Insightful blogpost - "The Problem With EdX" - Disruptive or counter-disruptive | Networked learning | Scoop.it

Harvard University has been hot this week: first, there was the announcement of EdX, which I feel will be just another marketing channel for Harvard and M.I.T.. Second, there was the call to their staff to publish in Open Access journals. Which of the two will be more disruptive and conducive of networked learning? My bet is that the second initiative will be more disruptive to academic practice...
