A Kickstarter project for a Micro Phone Lens makes a camera phone into a portable handheld microscope.

The Micro Phone Lens is a soft lens that sticks directly onto the camera lens on the back of your phone. Users can then zoom into 15X magnification in high focus. The minimum camera requirement is 5 megapixels. Backers who contribute $15 or more will receive a Micro PHone Lens and plastic carrying case. After fulfilling the Kickstarter orders, Larson would eventually like to make the lenses available on Amazon. The University of Washington graduate has been working on the business plan for the Micro Phone Lens for over a year.
In the future, Larson also plans to release a 150X lens, which will have even more precise microscope capabilities.

YOUR CAMERA DOESN’T MATTER
The vast majority of imagery is now seen in the exact same places: on smartphones and tablets, via apps such as Pinterest, Facebook, Google+, Flipboard and most importantly, Instagram. At 1024 x 1024 pixels, who can really tell whether a photo was taken on an iPhone or a Canon 5D? More to the point, who cares?

Last month, the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) released its 2016 report detailing yearly trends in camera shipments. Using that data, photographer Sven Skafisk has created a graph that makes it easy to visualize the data, namely the major growth in smartphone sales over the past few years and the apparent impact it has had on dedicated camera sales. The chart shows smartphone sales achieving a big spike around 2010, the same time range in which dedicated camera sales reached its peak. Each following year has represented substantial growth in smartphone sales and significant decreases in dedicated camera sales, particularly in the compact digital cameras category. Per the CIPA report, total digital camera shipments last year fell by 31.7% over the previous year. The report cites multiple factors affecting digital camera sales overall, with smartphones proving the biggest factor affecting the sales of digital cameras with built-in lenses. The Association's 2017 outlook includes a forecast that compact digital cameras will see another 16.7-percent year-on-year sales decrease this year. Skafisk's graph below shows the massive divide between smartphone sales and camera sales - be prepared to do some scrolling.

Snapchat has a patent, “Single mode visual media capture,” on its technology that allows the user to take a picture by tapping the camera button and a video by holding down the same camera button. Photos are simply taken by the tap, and videos end when you release the camera button, or after 10 seconds.
The app always opens directly to the camera screen, and this single camera, single button for both photo and video makes capturing moments simple and very fast. Vine’s recording interface is most similar, and is also quite quick, but it only does video.

It's easy enough to describe the Galaxy S4 Zoom, since it's essentially a Galaxy S4 Mini with a 10x zoom lens stuck on the back. But that sort of summary doesn't do it justice. When you hold the phone-slash-camera and look at the optically stabilized image captured by its 16-megapixel, point-and-shoot grade sensor, you begin to realize that -- at least for those who do a lot of snapping and sending -- this combo of components holds some serious power.

Nokia imaging guru Damian Dinning, who is considered the driving force behind the firm’s smartphone camera technology, has left the Finland-based company.
Dinning was the guy behind the incredible camera on Nokia's newest flagship phone, the Lumia 920. It's one of the best camera's ever used in a smartphone.
