The spiral of silence:
The spiral of silence is a mass communication theory introduced by Elizabeth Noelle – Neumann in 1974 to describe the process of public opinion, that she defined it as the process an individual experience when he may find that the views he holds are losing ground, the more uncertain he will become of himself and the less he will be inclined to express his opinion.
Noelle – Neumann goes on to say that the individual who has the opposing opinion will eventually experience feelings of isolation or a danger of isolation if their views are publically or openly expressed, they risk being isolated from the majority. She draws else upon classical writers of public opinion to attributes or explain this concept and reaction by individuals. Neumann developed five hypotheses or which to test the spiral of silence theory. The hypotheses were formulated based on prominent theories and core concepts of public opinion.
Neumann’s study points out that the mass media does influence public opinion, but is not clear about the kind of relationship that exist between the two. (1)
She opines that, “ mass media are a part of the system which the individual uses again information about environment.
