A simple guide to understanding how to effectively use Twitter hashtags in marketing and how you shouldn't! [note mg] Every time we host live webinars (and as this long list suggests, that is quite often), quite a few attendees get confused about what to do with the hashtag we provide. What is it? What does it do? How do you create one? Let me explain! What is a hashtag? A Twitter hashtag is simply a keyword phrase, spelled out without spaces, with a pound sign (#) in front of it. For example, #inboundchat and #ILoveChocolate are both hashtags. What does a hashtag do? A Twitter hashtag ties the conversations of different users into one stream, which you can find by searching the hastag in Twitter Search or by using a third-party monitoring tool such as HootSuite. Twitter has added 100 million users so far this year and is the platform of choice if you want to follow, search and engage with people in a particular niche or industry. In fact Twitter was never created to be a social networking platform and still today Twitter does not claim to be a social media channel stating on its blog. “Twitter facilitates social networking, but it’s not a social networking website“. Despite this claim it certainly is a place where you can in real time and in short sentences communicate with other people globally. It allows you to promote your content and receive feedback and if people like what they read they will retweet your tweet to their followers.

Do you participate in so many different types of online marketing strategies that when your boss asks you which one is the most effective, you don’t know what to say? Sure it’s easy to spot the top referring traffic source in Google Analytics, but you won’t be able to say what overall online marketing method is really working as a whole unless you want to start adding up different referral sources with a calculator and then cross reference them with goals, demographics, and other data. This is where Google Analytics Advanced Segments come into play. Using these, you can create different segments for different groups of referral traffic – traffic from social media, article marketing, link building, directories, local search, guest posts, and so on. You can then see everything including demographics, conversions, and top content for each group of referral traffic and compare them against each other to know which ones are the best.
